Southwest monsoon set in over Andaman Sea and adjoining south Bay of
Bengal on 20th May 2009. Under its influence, the southerly surge over the
region increased. It resulted in increase in the horizontal pressure gradient and
the north-south wind gradient over the region. Hence the lower level horizontal
