In-Depth Information
The estimation model, which is calculated from the variogram, is introduced as
an equation which determines and fixes the weight that needs to be applied to the
data during the interpolation process. The kriging method has frequently been used
in many different applications within the field of climatology [COU 99; LAB 95]. In
order to create Figure 2.3c, the standard function from the ArcGIS software program
was used. Within this particular function the normal kriging method comes
equipped with a spherical semi-variogram.

Figure 2.3. Maps showing duration of sunshine in France in summer.
These maps were produced by the three different interpolation
methods: a) gravitational, b) cubic spline, and c) kriging
2.3.1.4. Maps generated by the three different interpolation methods
Figure 2.3 shows maps that were generated by the three different interpolation
methods mentioned (IDW, cubic spline, and kriging). These maps show the duration
of sunshine in France in summer. Each map has produced very similar results with
those for the Mediterranean area to the south contrasting with the results for
coastline between Brittany and the region of Nord-Pas-de-Calais. Differences
