3.1. Optimal pumping rates
Eleven new wells are planned at the predetermined locations (Fig. 3). All
wells are screened down to 10 m below the mean sea level. Optimal pumping
rates are calculated using the proposed model (Fig. 4). Total freshwater
pumping rate of all the new wells is about 1,500 m 3 /day, and the maximum
pumping rate is 460 m 3 /day at well 4.
3.2. Excessive pumping
To demonstrate indirectly the optimality of the solution the pumping rate
of well 3 is increased by 86.4 m 3 /day higher than the determined optimal
pumping rate to see if saltwater contamination occurs. Figure 5 depicts the
ratio of the saltwater pumping rate and the total pumping rate along with
the distribution of drawdown in freshwater hydraulic head. Figure 6 shows
