Location of Vaigai dam in south India.
area is 2,553 sq. km and water spread area is 25.9 sq. km. The reservoir
is getting water from catchments of two states namely, Tamil Nadu and
Kerala. Maximum storage capacity of the dam is 193.84 Mm 3 .Theperiod
of study is from 1969 to 1997 of measured historical data. Flow data from
water year 1969 to 1993 is used for training of the neural network model
for operation of the reservoir and data from water year 1994 to 1997 is used
for validation of the model.
3. Model Development
First, a linear programming model is developed with the objective function
consists of maximizing the net annual benefit of growing six primary crops
in the whole basin deducting the annualized cost of development and supply
of irrigation from surface and groundwater resources.
For maximizing net benefit for every subarea,
