2. Study Area
The study area, the Longchuang River, a tributary of the Upper Yangtze,
is located between 24
◦
45
N-26
◦
15
N and 100
◦
56
E-102
◦

E, southwest
China. The length of the main channel is 231.2 km. The gauging station,
Huangguayuan, has a drainage area of 5,560 km
2
(Fig. 1). The climatic data
were collected from six weather stations (Fig. 1). The climatic and hydro-
logic data in wet season (May-December) from 1963 to 2001 were used for
the modeling. Seven variables were selected as the causal variables, includ-
ing two variables representing the average climate status (monthly average
rainfall (

) and temperature (

)), four variables representing the influence
from storm event (the numbers of 25 mm- and 50 mm-or-more rainfall days
in each month (

) and their cumulative rainfall (

3. Methodology
The original data were processed through three steps for the ANN model-
ing. First, the climatic data from six weather stations were converted into
