In-Depth Information
2. Study Area
The study area, the Longchuang River, a tributary of the Upper Yangtze,
is located between 24 45 N-26 15 N and 100 56 E-102 02 E, southwest
China. The length of the main channel is 231.2 km. The gauging station,
Huangguayuan, has a drainage area of 5,560 km 2 (Fig. 1). The climatic data
were collected from six weather stations (Fig. 1). The climatic and hydro-
logic data in wet season (May-December) from 1963 to 2001 were used for
the modeling. Seven variables were selected as the causal variables, includ-
ing two variables representing the average climate status (monthly average
rainfall ( R ) and temperature ( T )), four variables representing the influence
from storm event (the numbers of 25 mm- and 50 mm-or-more rainfall days
in each month ( N 25 , N 50 ) and their cumulative rainfall ( R 25 , R 50 )) and
water discharge ( W ).
3. Methodology
The original data were processed through three steps for the ANN model-
ing. First, the climatic data from six weather stations were converted into
