technique coupled with method of characteristics and it also used to predict
TDS migration for the next 20 years. Sensitivity analysis was carried out to
identify the parameters, which are influencing the contaminant migration.
Sensitivity analysis shows that advection and not dispersion is the pre-
dominant mode of solute migration. There are a large number of reports
and papers available to describe the solute transport models to study the
contaminant migration in the industrial belts, coastal aquifer etc. 7 - 15 The
computer software Visual MODFLOW 3.0 is used for the present study.
2. Background of the Area
The area, an area of 240 km 2 , is a hard rock, drought prone region, which is
situated in Tamilnadu, southern India (Fig. 1). It is characterized by undu-
lating topography with hills located in the southern parts, sloping toward
north and northwest. 16 The elevation varies from 360 m above mean sea
level (amsl) in southern portions to 240 m in the northern part. No perennial
streams exit in the area, except for short distance streams encompassing
