vulcanologists from the nearby Volcanoes Observatory to approach the molten lava, and
even the vents, wearing heat-protecting suits. They will probably have already detected the
magma rising in the vent through a sensitive network of seismometers and by measuring
the change in the pull of gravity brought about by the upwelling magma. Sometimes they
are able to collect uncontaminated samples of volcanic gas directly from the vents and take
the temperature of the molten lava. It erupts at about 1,150 degrees Celsius.
