streets, 1535 out of the original 1797 polygons are now selected. Export these
selected polygons by right clicking on the layer, and using Data

Export into
a data set named “internetcafesites” or another name that is suitable. Why
could you not have used another Overlay
→
Intersect operation to achieve the
above results instead of the “select by location” function? This strategy would
not have considered busy streets properly.
Now that you have narrowed your selection to just a few neighborhoods, you
will note that there is one neighborhood where the median age (med_age) is
the lowest (the “youngest” neighborhood) of the neighborhoods under consid-
eration. You decide to make this neighborhood your #1 recommendation for
the InstantWorld location. This selection is the area where the median age is
21.1, and it is located just south of Interstate Highway 25 and west of University
Boulevard, on the north side of the University of Denver campus (

You used busy streets, median age, population 18 to 21 years old, and the loca-
tion of colleges, universities, and high schools to determine the best location
for your Internet café. What other criteria might you need to add to be able to
make an even better decision to site this kind of business? How many of these
criteria require knowledge about mathematics and geography? Other criteria
that might be important include a map of zoning, vacant properties, proper-
ties for sale, location of competitors, price of land, traffic volume, location of
