10.4.3 Routing exercise: Determining best route for a tour bus in
Manhattan
In this activity (Figure 10.11), you will use an ArcGIS Online routing service
within ArcGIS for Desktop to design the best route for a tour bus through
New York City, subject to certain conditions. As other GIS-based tasks migrate
up to the cloud, so too are many tasks that have traditionally been in the
desktop world of GIS. One example of this is that ArcGIS Online now includes
a collection of geocoding tasks and a routing service that supports point-to-
point and optimized routing for North America and Europe.
Suppose you are the new owner of a double-decker, open-top Manhattan
tour bus. Your job is to route your bus from St John the Divine Church,
to Radio City, the New York Public Library, the Empire State Building, the
House of Oldies in Greenwich Village, the Woolworth Building, the American
Geographical Society on Wall Street, and return to the starting point.
To solve this problem, start ArcGIS for Desktop and access the ArcMap appli-
cation. Add from ArcGIS Online, the World Street Map. Zoom and pan the
map so you are only looking at Manhattan Island in New York City. Under
Extensions, make sure the Network Analyst extension is turned on. On the
