does give a skewed picture of concentrations of population.
In Figure 6.8, we divide the total count by the area to measure population
density, which might have more meaning in terms of seeing where there
is concentrated population. Compare northern Arizona and Nevada in these
two maps. Which one better fits what you already know about population
distributions and concentrations in this part of the United States? The data
in Figure 6.8 have been “normalized.” Normalizing data divides each of the
