of the maps. They all use the same underlying database. The reason they look
different from each other is that the methods of partitioning the data into
classes differ from map to map. Clearly, the method chosen for the partitioning
of data is critical.
Think back to the chapter on color. In this map set, we use varying shades of
a single color, rather than four different colors, so that the intensity of color
reveals the intensity or the size of the underlying data. Once one has worked
at deciding how to partition the data, then he or she also needs to consider
how factors such as color selection might feed into such decisions.
