Glacial. Maximum. (LGM,. left-hand. panels).and. the. present. (right-hand. panels)..The. igure. shows. different. possible. responses. to. warming. from. the.
LGM.to.the.present.along.elevational.gradients.depending.on.initial.range.position.and.range.breadth..The.taxon.labeled.A.is.widely.distributed.at.lower.
elevations.at.the.LGM.and.is.still.found.across.all.three.peaks.today..However,.gene.low.across.intervening.valleys.is.limited.as.lowland.habitat.has.
disappeared..Taxon.B.is.found.at.higher.elevations.than.in.the.past.and.shows.an.even.stronger.pattern.of.isolation.on.peaks..In.addition,.the.taxon.has.
gone.locally.extinct.on.a.low-elevation.peak..Taxon.C.is.more.narrowly.distributed.but.is.found.at.the.lowest.elevation.and.there.is.still.gene.low.between.
at.least.two.of.the.peaks..Arrows.represent.locations.where.gene.low.across.mountain.peaks.is.possible,.given.suitable.lowland.routes.
