performed but is required in the earthquake design of some critical facilities. The down-
hole, suspension logging and surface-wave methods are applicable for profiling at the
intermediate (75 to 225m) and deep (greater than 225m) depths associated with deeper
profiling.

FinancialsupportformuchofthisworkwasprovidedthroughtheNationalScienceFoun-
dation under grants CMS-0324326 and CMS-0421275 and through the U.S. Geologi-
cal Survey (USGS) under awards 01HQR0036 and 06HQGR0050. Financial support for
the development of the nees@utexas Equipment Site was provided by the George E.
Brown, Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES) under grant CMS-
0086605. Support from the U.S. Department of Energy was provided for studies at the
Yucca Mountain and Hanford Sites. Interactions with numerous colleagues are appreci-
ated. Thanks alsogoes to graduate students and staffat theUniversity of Texas at Austin
who assisted inthefield and laboratory work.
