Pore gas
The submerged organic component of peat is not entirely inert but undergoes very slow
decomposition, accompanied by the production of marsh gas (methane) with lesser
amounts of nitrogen and carbon dioxide ( Muskeg Engineering Handbook , 1969).
Hydrogen sulfide is another gas encountered in deposits containing sulfur. Gas con-
tent is of considerable practical importance since it affects all the physical properties
