The peat-forming vegetation consisted mainly of large trees, resulting in a high
lignin content, which according to Anderson (1983) is twice that of bog peat. Fig-
ure 2.13 illustrates the geological development of a riverine depositional model leading
to the deposition of the basin peat.
2.5 SITE INVESTIGATIONS AND SAMPLING OF PEAT
Before embarking on a project and locating a structure or embankment, it is impor-
tant to have an overview of the distribution of soils, and in particular the location of
peat land. Use of archival materials, earlier investigations, aerial photos and maps is
important in delineating areas of rock outcrops, coarse or fine-grained soils and peat
