6.10 TRIAL EMBANKMENTS
Rahadian et al . (2003) describe the performance of five full-scale trial embankments
built by the Institute of Road Engineering, Indonesia, at Berengbengkel, Central Kali-
mantan, in order to study the performance of embankment construction on peat
deposits for the purpose of developing a design guide. They are:
1. Normal embankment, which was built over 3m of peat deposit.
2.
Surcharge embankment, which was built over 2.5m of peat deposit.
3.
Timber piled embankment which was built over 6m of peat deposit
4.
JHS (mini concrete) piled embankment which was built over 11m of peat deposit
5.
EPS embankment, which was built over more than 11m of peat deposit.
The Berengbengkel peat is categorized as fibrous, hemic (H2-H5), low ash and
highly acidic peat. The thickness of the deposit varies from 2m to 15m. Pollen analysis
