6.5.5 AuGeo pile system
A variant of the pile support system is the AuGeo pile system. This system is theoret-
ically cheaper than the conventional pile system (Abdullah et al ., 2003). The AuGeo
piled embankment system consists of lightweight piles with an enlarged individual pile
cap and pile-foot or pile base. A gravel mattress wrapped in two layers of high-strength
geogrids is placed on top of the pile caps to transfer the load from the embankment
to the pile caps (Figure 6.29). The piles are pushed into the soil in a close square grid
using modified vertical drain stitcher equipment at high speed. In this manner the loads
are theoretically transferred directly to the competent layers and the soft compressible
layers are not loaded. In this way excessive settlement is avoided and the construction
time can be limited.
