Figure 5.11 shows the settlement parameters for some French bog peat. The trend
of the relationship between the settlement parameters c c /(1

e o ) is to increase with
increasing natural water content.
5.2.2 Coefficient of consolidation, c v
There is a significant decrease in the coefficient of consolidation of the undisturbed
samples with an increase in effective stress above the apparent preconsolidation pres-
sure ( σ c ), as can be seen in Figure 5.12. This decrease is more marked in the samples
that had higher organic contents (Farrell et al ., 1994). The coefficient of consolidation,
c v , generally decreases as the liquid limit of the soil increases.
