In-Depth Information
43. 1871, August 21, 20 h 32 min.
A strong earthquake lasting 15 s. occurred at Callao. Approximately at the same
time the vessel 'Colon' felt a strong seaquake to the west of Cape Chala, and waves
immediately appeared on the surface.
At Callao, the ocean, that was unusually calm till then, suddenly became ex-
tremely agitated; a strong southern wind started to blow. At Serro-Asul the ocean
remained very agitated for 2 days.

At Pisagua, not far from the shore, an enormous water column rose in the ocean,
and strong vortexes formed. It was announced that at the same time in Caleta
Pabellon de Pica and Chanaral long shakings were felt, accompanied by a boom.
46. 1878, February 14.
At 4 h the steamboat 'Chile' experienced in the Bay of Concepcion (Talcahuano)

A most strong earthquake took place in the central part of Chile with its source
near Valparaiso.
From small coastal villages near Constitucion, such as Buchupureo, Putu, Lico
and others, the news arrived that during the earthquake the ocean assumed a state of
'boiling' or 'gurgling', so the process of regular wave formation was violated.
49. 1930, December 29, 3 h 26 min. 24 s.
In Copiano strong vibrations were felt. The earthquake was felt in Cocimbo and
La Serena. It was preceded by a shock at 23 h 55 min on the 28th and was accompa-
nied by subsequent shocks noted up to the 30th.
In the region of Cocimbo and up to 550 km to the north during 24 h after the first
earthquake unusually large tides were observed together with strong agitation of
the ocean. Giant waves were coloured deep green, the water had an unpleasant smell
and was saturated with plankton.
