17. 1860, August, no date.
Light earthquakes and plenty of rain, accompanied by strong winds and floods,
took place on Minahasa Peninsula.
18. 1897, March 15, 6 h 30 min.
A strong earthquake on Kayuadi Island, accompanied by a thunder-like roar com-
ing from the water.
An eyewitness of the events said that half an hour after the shaking began some-
one shouted that the water was rising. ... The third wave rolled up the shore ...
The water was of an unusual green colour.
19. 1904, September 7.
Shaking of the land was felt at Cilacap. At noon, an eyewitness on the southern
coast of Java noticed, that the ocean water turned white (became similar to milk).
By 23 h the phenomenon stopped, but resumed in 2 h.
20. 1913, March 14, 16 h 45 min. 4 . 2 N, 126 . 5 E.
An extremely strong earthquake with its source in the vicinity of Sangihe Island.
After the earthquake pouring rains took place.
A local captain from the Talaud islands claimed that at the same time as he heard
a boom he saw how in the sea, several kilometers west of the island, a large elevation
formed.
Sailors in boats near Surigao felt the earthquake; waves rose on the sea surface.
21. 1922, February 22.
An earthquake of strength 4, preceded by a boom, occurred in Amahae at 19 h
45 min. According to reliable fishermen's accounts, by midnight two more under-
ground shocks took place, while the sea was very agitated all this time. No instru-
ments registered the earthquake.
ISLANDS NEW GUINEA, NEW BRITAIN, NEW IRELAND
22. 1857 (1856), April 17, immediately after sunset.
A powerful earthquake occurred on Umboy Island (Ruk), located in the strait
separating New Guinea and New Britain. Shocks were repeated.
To the west of island Tolokiva (Lotten), a volcano seemed to rise from the water
and to smoke for a long time. After the shaking 'the sea started to move'.
23. 1937, May 28/29.
The volcanoes Raluan and Tavurvur in the Blanche-Bay erupted. The first strong
earthquake broke out on May 28 at about 13 h 30 min. A new shock was felt in
Rabaul on May 29 at about 5 h 30 min, and it was followed by a series of shocks
of varying intensities, that lasted right up to the volcano's eruption. At 13 h 10 min,
the water at the western coast of Raluan island became turbid and started to move.
SOLOMON ISLANDS, SANTA CRUZ, NEW HEBRIDES
24. 1863, August 17.
A weak underground shock occurred on August 15 at 19 h 30 min in Noumea
(Port-de-France) on New Caledonia. A more noticeable shock took place on August
17 at 20 h. It caused significant derangement of the instruments of the astronomical
observatory. Subsequently, news was received that the shocks could be related to
eruption of the volcano on the Tanna island.
The schooner 'Ariel', anchored at the nearby Eromanga Island, brought the news,
that the shock of August 17 was felt on this island with a great strength and was
