In-Depth Information
September 19. An underground rumble was heard, the sea became stormy owing
to unusual heaves and lowerings of the water and to eddy flows.
October 4, 22 h 15 min. A strong underground rumble was heard, movements of
the sea water continued. Similar events took place till the end of November.
15. 1863, March 22, 22 h 15 min. Aegean Sea, Island of Rhodes. 36 30 N, 28 E.
A destructive earthquake occurred. The Greek ship 'Panagia' experienced such
a strong seaquake near the Island of Kasos, that two masts were broken off.
The earthquake was followed by many aftershocks, noticed on the island of
Rodos, in Izmir and other places. It coincided with a storm that raged on March 22
in the East Mediterranean, therefore, reports on the earthquake were mixed up with
information on the storm and calamities at sea, the information being of not quite
clear origin. Thus, the French newspaper Le Moniteur wrote, that the earthquake
gave rise to a terrible storm at sea, which resulted in many accidents.
16. 1866, January 19 or 22, 12 h 30 min. Aegean Sea, Island of Chios. 38 15 N,
26 15 E.
A strong earthquake. Accompanied by numerous shocks. On the same day, in-
tensive boiling of the sea water was noticed approximately in the middle of the strait
separating the Island of Chios and Asia Minor. A cloud vapour seemed to rise from
the waves.
17. 1867, March 7, 8. Aegean Sea, Island of Lesbos. 39 2 N, 26 4 E, M = 7 . 0.
A destructive earthquake occurred on the Island of Lesbos and in its vicinity at
18 h 15 min-18 h 30 min. The earthquake lasted for about 40 s in Mitilini, the main
city of the island. A dense cloud of dust rose, owing to the shaking.
An eyewitness wrote that the sea in the harbour of Mitilini rose and was cov-
ered with foam, like in the case of an underground explosion; according to another
eyewitness: 'the sea swelled, as if its bottom rose, and started to boil'.
18. 1878, April 19 (15). Zone of the Sea of Marmara. 40 8 N, 29 0 E, M = 6 , 7.
An earthquake occurred in Bursa and Izmit and spread up to the European shore
of the Bosphorus. The Sea of Marmara was in a state of unusual agitation, and
the water seemed to boil.
19. 1887, February (March) 23, 6 h 20 min. Ligurian Sea, Italy, France. 43 42
N, 08 03 E.
A strong earthquake covered an area of 570,000 km 2 Deep-water fish, and fish
rarely encountered in the winter season, were found thrown out onto the beaches of
Nice, San Remo, Savona.
20. 1888-1892. Tyrrhenian Sea, Lipari Islands.
The volcano Vulcano erupted on the island with the same name. The underwater
cable laid approximately 3 miles to the east of the island at a depth of 700-1,000 m
and connecting the Lipari Islands with Milazzo on Sicily, became unserviceable five
times owing to severances (November 19 and 22, 1888; March 30 and September
11, 1889; December 14, 1892). As a rule, the water at the severance points 'boiled'
strongly; silt was present at the water surface, ash appeared at the sea bottom
(the points, where the cable was severed, were considered to indicate the sites of
local underwater volcanic eruptions).
