waste is important in determining the extent of environmental damage. The Streeter-Phelps equa-
tion may be used to determine whether a certain stream has the capability to handle the estimated
flow of wastes. In addition, if the stream receives wastes from other sites, then the equation may be
helpful in determining whether the stream has recovered fully before it receives the next batch of
wastes and, therefore, if it will be able to recover from the succeeding waste effluents.
