of Vesuvius, and sent these to the Royal Society. Piaggio, who
lived at Resina at the foot of Vesuvius, 'always rose at daybreak',
Hamilton wrote, 'and took his observations several times in the
day. No man was ever more ready with his pencil as his masterly
sketches testify nor no man was ever more attached to truth.'ยน
Presenting Piaggio's eight bound manuscript volumes to the
Royal Society, Hamilton confessed that he was 'too old & indo-
lent to set about making an Extract that he thinks would form an
interesting paper in some future volume of the Transactions of
the Society.' But he added:

Sir Wm is obliged to confess that they do not throw any
certain lights into what is carried on by nature deep in the
bowells of the Earth, but by the extraordinary & various
forms that the smoke from the crater take in the air.
