1772 his party included the artist John Cleveley the Younger
(1747-1786), who brought back a series of workmanlike water-
colours; when William Hamilton took the scientific initiative on
Vesuvius in the 1760s he hired Peter Fabris, who revolutionized
the art of the volcano, and changed our ways of seeing them.
