Other empire-building nations commissioned exploratory
expeditions to volcanoes in their newfound lands. A Spanish
expedition under Don Francisco Suero climbed the volcano Misti,
near Arequipa, Peru, during a period of activity, and only a few
weeks before it erupted with enormous violence in July 1784.²4
Suero's report illustrates the dangers of climbing a rumbling vol-
cano, and describes the fumes already given off by the lava and
the putrid water.²5
