The English diarist and traveller John Evelyn (1620-1706)
made a journey across the Alps and down into Italy in the mid-
1640s. Just over ten years before, the area around Naples had been
devastated by the most powerful eruption since ad 79. Evelyn
described what he had heard of the 1631 eruption and the
tsunami that followed it:
