awareness of the power of volcanoes to disrupt us at the very
least, and destroy us at the worst, artists have a new weapon. How-
ever powerfully or inexplicably they depict volcanoes as their
subject, volcanoes will themselves surprise even the most inven-
tive and imaginative of artists. It may be that current political,
social and economic structures are too finely tuned to survive
unscathed a volcanic eruption on the scale of Laki (1783),
Tambora (1815) or Krakatoa (1883). The volcano, on this planet
at least, will probably have the last hurrah.
