she visited Eldfell, subsequently creating an exhibition Nomadic
Landmass , which was shown at Doggerfisher Gallery in Edin-
burgh in 2005. Halperin has written:
My work explores the relationship between geological
phenomena and daily life. Whether boiling milk in a 100
degree Celsius sulphur spring in the crater of an active volcano
or celebrating my birthday with a landmass of the same age,
the geologic history and environmental situation specific to
the locale directly informs the direction each piece takes.4
Nomadic Landmass included photographic images taken
from the air over Eldfell, and geological specimens and drawings
taken from photographs of the destruction caused by the birth
of the mountain. A further project of a volcanic nature, Emergent
Land mass (2006) explored the short life of Graham Island
(Ferdinandea), appearing and disappearing in the Mediterranean
in 1831. Halperin has taken the extreme detachment of volcanic
activity as her subject, and has personalized it, drawn it to her-
self, and invited it to become intertwined with her own life. The
mountain's pulse, and hers, become one.
