began slowly and with considerable logistical effort to travel mere
hundreds to discover the interior of their own island. Icelandic
artists born in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries
travelled overwhelmingly to Copenhagen for their art training.
Iceland until 1874 was governed from Denmark, and had no
formal public art school until 1947 when the Reykjavík School
of Visual Art was founded.¹¹ Ásgrímur Jónsson (1876-1958)
studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen in
1900-1903, as did Brynjólfur Thórdarson (1896-1938), Finnur
