period of only twelve years, 1808 to 1822, contributed signifi-
cantly to the burden of ash in the skies, and to the intensity of
the colour of sunrises and sunsets: Agung (Bali): 1808; Mayon
(Philippines): 1814; Tambora ( Java): 1815; Raung ( Java): 1817;
Usu ( Japan): 1822; and Galunggung ( Java): 1822 . ³² One seren -
dipitous eruption, of Mount Erebus in Antarctica, was taking
place in 1841 just as the first human visitors arrived on the
continent, while others, such as Stromboli in the Mediterranean
and Izalco off the coast of El Salvador, were in almost constant
eruption. Izalco, born in 1770, came to be known as 'the lighthouse
