- whilst significant - were apparently reversible; at several islands, for instance,
some native vegetation degraded by goats apparently recovered after the animals
were eradicated (although it is not clear whether ecological communities regained
their pre-impacted condition). However, other changes, such as the introduction
of Lantana spp. , may be much more difficult to reverse, and the coconut palms
first established in the late nineteenth century remain a feature of many island
landscapes in the Great Barrier Reef today.
