Sunday 23 December
Cloudy and dull with rainfall. A light south-easterly wind which veered around to the
south-west through the course of the day.
Monday 24 December
Started as a fine day but heavy rainfall later. A strong south-westerly wind which had
increased to gale force by 6 p.m.
Tuesday 25 December
Cloudy and unsettled with rain. Strong to gale force south-westerly winds at 8 a.m.,
which moderated as day went on and winds veered to westward.
Wednesday 26 December (arrival of Hesperus )
Theweatherwasfineinthemorningwithsomeshowerswhichincreasedtoheavierrain
later in the day. A moderate to strong wind was blowing from the south-west. Charts
show a disturbed sea state to the north of the Flannan Isles.

Notes
1 Force 8 = Moderately high waves with breaking crests forming spindrift. Well-marked
streaks of foam are blown along wind direction. Considerable airborne spray. Waves up to
25ft.
2 Force 9 = High waves whose crests sometimes roll over. Dense foam is blown along wind
direction. Large amounts of airborne spray may begin to reduce visibility. Waves up to 32ft.
