Lake area and the rest in the Dalyan Channel network drainage area. The largest
town in the lagoon drainage area is Dalyan, with a population of 3,357 according
to the 1997 census. Koycegiz is the largest town in the lake drainage area, with a
population of 7,526. 16
The population increase in the lagoon area does not reflect the rapid and huge
increase in other regions of Turkey where industrial activities are significant. As
expected, there are no significant industrial activities in this area, which is an
important factor promoting high population increase in Turkey. It may be concluded
that the economy of the watershed area is mainly based on agriculture, tourism,
fishery, and forestry.
9.5.1.1.2.2 Land Use
Detailed information on current land use was gathered from the NIC of the
TRGDRA, as shown in Figure 9.5.4D . The data were validated by the site visits.
The current land use of the area is given in Table 9.5.4.
Because towns and small communities of the lagoon drainage area are scattered
in agricultural lands, they cannot be shown separately. Forests and agricultural land
cover approximately 85% of the watershed.
9.5.1.1.2.3 Transportation, Energy, and Communication Facilities
Regional, national, and international transportation is facilitated by roads, marine
transportation, and airlines; there is no railway. Koycegiz town center is 40 km from
the international airport of Dalaman. Thus, it is easy to travel to Dalyan and other
places with high tourism potential. Marine transportation to the coastline of Mugla
province and its vicinity is provided by Turkish Maritime Lines. There is extensive
bus transportation to the major cities of Turkey from Koycegiz town center.
9.5.1.1.2.4 Infrastructure Facilities
Sewer systems and common wastewater treatment systems for both Koycegiz and Dalyan
were recently constructed within the context of the Special Protection Authority Project
supported by the KfW Fund, Germany. Leaky/leak-proof cesspools have been used to
solve the wastewater problem in rural areas. It was decided to treat these wastewaters
