9.5.1.1.1.10 Water Quality
Surface and bottom layer concentrations of water quality parameters were individ-
ually considered for further evaluation because of the dual layer flow in the lagoon.
The ranges for various parameters observed along the channel are given for surface
and bottom layers in Table 9.5.1 and Table 9.5.2, respectively.
Dissolved oxygen concentrations for both surface and bottom layers were gen-
erally found to be around their saturation values. In winter and spring, N and P
loads transported via surface run-off and leaching increase due to high amounts of
precipitation and snow melting. 9 NH 4 + -N oxidized nitrogen (NO 2 -N + NO 3 -N)
concentrations were observed to be higher in spring than in summer months for both
surface and bottom waters. Nitrate concentrations of the bottom water were lower
than surface water concentrations. Freshwater input to the system increases in spring
months so there may be an increase in nitrogen concentration carried to the water
through run-off and groundwater. Fertilizers used in agricultural areas are among
