FIGURE 9.5.5 Koycegiz-Dalyan watershed and its subbasins.
Alagol Lake, situated at the southwestern part of the Dalyan area, has a surface
area of 0.55 km 2 with a round shape and an average depth of 3 m. In spring 1999,
the average salinities in the upper and lower layers measured during 2 years of
monitoring studies were 8 and 32 ppt, respectively, and salinity stratification was
observed at approximately 1.4 m. Sulungur Lake, situated at the southeastern part
of the Dalyan area, has a surface area of 3 km 2 with a maximum depth of 13 m. It
showed a hydrodynamic behavior similar to Alagol Lake during the field study. The
only difference was the depth of stratification, which was located at an average of
2.8 m below the surface. The upper layer had salinity of 3-28 ppt, and the lower
layer had an average salinity of 35 ppt, which is very close to the salinity of the sea.
The Dalyan Channel is a narrow water body, 7 km long, 40-150 m wide, and
2-5 m deep. The vertical salinity profile of the Dalyan Channel varies both seasonally
and spatially. The salinity in the upstream of the channel, where the Koycegiz Lake
joins the Dalyan Channel network, is low compared to downstream and other regions
in the system.
