of monitoring studies must provide adequate data to address a wide range of
anticipated and unanticipated estimation tasks over a long time frame. Four
sampling designs generally appropriate for research studies were described:
simple random, two-stage, stratified, and cluster sampling. Three spatial
designs generally appropriate for monitoring studies were described: sys-
tematic sampling, GRS (for one-dimensional resources), and BAS designs.
