a subset of the models that are available in PRESENCE. Both options have
also been successfully run on Mac or Linux systems using emulators. There
is also an R package UNMARKED available that again includes the ability
to fit a subset of the methods included in PRESENCE (as well as some addi-
tional models that are not in PRESENCE). Finally, OpenBUGS and JAGS are
general statistical software that can be used to apply these methods within
a Bayesian framework.
Although there has been rapid development of these methods since the
early 2000s, there is still a lot to be learned about their performance under
realistic field conditions to enable the efficient use of valuable logistical
resources. Further refinements of the methods are sure to progress as the
advantages and limitations of these techniques are explored.
