Finally although this chapter has been about
mountain environments, it is important to stress
the links between mountain regions and low-
lands. Erosion in the uplands has a profound
impact on downstream sedimentation (e.g.
Brahmaputra and Ganges rivers draining the
Himalaya) and at the junction between moun-
tain and lowland environments sedimentolog-
ical processes are often most active (e.g. alluvial
fan aggradation, Waiho River, Westland, New
Zealand). Sediment processes in lowland river
systems are explored in Chapter 3.
