inconvenient obstacle to ship traffic during relatively low water-level conditions
(Laanearu et al. 2007 ) .
Littoral processes near the Narva River mouth have also been strongly modified
by the presence of the Narva-Jõesuu breakwater. It is a concrete structure about
300m in length and built in the late 1980s (i) to facilitate navigation between the
harbour and sea and (ii) to prevent the extensive beach erosion observed in the
1970s. The structure is built approximately perpendicular to the beach, westwards
from the river mouth. It effectively traps sand that generally is transported eastwards
along the coast. At the western side of the bulwark, the width of the dry beach has
