Fig. 2.5. this landscape, with Gannett Peak in the back-
ground and Dinwoody creek in the foreground, was buried
in ice about 21,000 to 16,000 years ago. note the alpine
cirques and U-shaped valley, both formed by Dinwoody
Glacier. Woodlands of whitebark pine grow at treeline, and
forests of engelmann spruce and subalpine fir occur on the
lower slopes. the riparian vegetation is dominated by various
species of willow (arctic, diamondleaf, Drummond's, grayleaf,
netleaf, and tweedy's ). At 13,809 feet, Gannett Peak is the
