7.1. A selection of data
One should recall that our collection of paleoclimatic data is made up of:
- four temperature reconstructions (Figure 2.3);
- one reconstruction of the CO 2 in the atmosphere (Figure 2.5);
- four reconstructions of solar irradiance (Figure 2.12);
- one reconstruction of volcanic activity (Figure 2.13).
Hence, there are 16 possible combinations, according to the temperature
and irradiance chosen.
In this chapter, we have arbitrarily chosen the only combination from
Ljungqvist-HadCRUT4 with Usoskin-lean0 , in order to present and give a
detailed commentary on the results of identification and the simulation
graphs. That does not mean we consider the databases selected as being the
most reliable, nor that the model identified would be the most likely. We
adopted this combination because it is the one which most clearly illustrates
a number of points appearing in forms which are either too exaggerated or
imperceptible in other combinations. In any case, we will not make any
general conclusions from these first observations.

identification. The results of identification are sensitive to this and it is
known that a truncation of data sometimes covers a manipulation intended to
We must not only select the data, but also a period
