10.5. Assuming the bottom layer of the North Sea has a mean thickness of 50 metres,
and using Fig. 10.24 , estimate the volume of the bottom layer of the seasonally
stratifying central and northern North Sea.
Thomas, et al., 2004 observed that 13 mmol m 3 of DIC is stored in the bottom
water of the stratified North Sea as a result of surface layer primary productiv-
ity. Use the estimate of annual bottom layer exchange with the North Atlantic
in Huthnance, et al., 2009 to calculate the potential export of DIC from the
North Sea to the North Atlantic.
