In-Depth Information
5.3. Phytoplankton with a growth rate of 0.5 d 1 are mixed through a homogeneous
deep water column within which the critical depth is 40 metres. What is the
maximum vertical
eddy diffusivity that would still allow growth of
phytoplankton?
5.4. Convert 10 mmol m 3 of nitrate into a mass of nitrogen per litre.
5.5. For the eddy diffusivity that you calculated in problem 5.3, estimate the swimming
speed that a dinoflagellate would need to have in order to outcompete a neutrally
buoyant phytoplankton. (Assume they both have the same growth rate.)
