also occur in NC, CO, Alaska (AK), Michigan (MI), and elsewhere in the USA. The
analysis contained herein suggests that soils with an umbric epipedon comprise
about 233,000 km 2 , or only about 2.7 % of the soil area of the USA. However, this
value is likely a gross underestimate, in view of the difficulty in identifying soils
with an umbric epipedon taxonomically.
