17.7 Summary
In the NRCS database, soils with a gypsic horizon occur in two orders, six sub-
orders, 12 great groups, 28 subgroups, and 133 soil series. Soils with a gypsic
horizon comprise 9,064 km 2 in the USA, primarily in the Basin and Range and
Colorado Plateau provinces of western USA. Climate, relief, and parent material
are key soil-forming factors contributing to the formation of gypsic horizons.
The predominant pedogenic process leading to the development of the gypsic
horizon is calcification, with argilluviation, solonization, and salinization occurring
in some soils.
