In-Depth Information
Whitehall was once home to the Palace of Whitehall, hence the name. We mentioned this
palace briefly yesterday while stopping to look at Kensington Palace. This area served as
residence and government buildings for the English monarchy from 1530-1698, when a fire
destroyed the entire palace, except the building you are standing in front of right now.
Banqueting Hall has served a number of different purposes over the years. Under the Tu-
dors, it is was used to house the Archbishops of York. Inside, you'll find a painting on the
ceiling by famous Flemish artist Sir Peter Paul Reubens, which was commissioned by King
Charles I. It is also where Charles was executed for treason in 1649.
Today it serves as a museum for the neighboring Royal United Services Institute and
houses some incredible historical items, including the skeleton of Marengo, Napoleon's
horse.
