Designed by John Nash, who also designed Trafalgar Square and St. James's Park, which
we'll visit tomorrow, the original purpose of Marble Arch when it was built in 1833 was as
a ceremonial entrance to Buckingham Palace, which Nash was also designing at the time.
However, the palace later closed itself in with black and gold gates, so Marble Arch was
deconstructed and moved to its current location in 1851. Nash was inspired by the Arc de
Triomphe in Paris. Originally only members of the royal family, the Kings Troop and Roy-
al Artillery were allowed to walk under this Marble Arch, so it's quite special for the public
to be able to do so today.
