This is Kensington Palace , built in 1605. It was purchased by Mary II and William III in
1689, because the couple really didn't like living in Whitehall Palace, which was the main
residence of royalty of the time. You'll learn more about Whitehall tomorrow. Plus, William
had chronic asthma and the damp location of Whitehall was not good for his health. They
had Christopher Wren renovate it and would retreat to the residence quite often. Other roy-
als who resided here include Queen Anne, George I and Queen Victoria. It's open to the
public and would make for a great day out of the city, without actually having to go too far.
