In-Depth Information
The Clink Prison was built in 1144, making it one of England's oldest prisons. The original
building burnt down during riots in 1780, so the museum is located in the basement of a
warehouse that was built in the same place as the Clink was once located. They say its
name came from the sound made by rattling chains placed on prisoners here. It was known
for its ill-treatment of prisoners and, by the end, as a holding place for those who had op-
posing views to the city's bishops, who if you remember, lived next door.
