In-Depth Information
On top of St. Paul's Cathedral, the Great Fire of London pretty much destroyed most of this
area of London when it sparked on September 2, 1666 and it all started where The Monu-
ment to the Great Fire of London stands today.
As you stand in front of this tall pillar, close your eyes and picture the city in Medieval
times. Where the monument stands was a bakery owned by Thomas Farriner. It was in this
bakery, in the wee-hours of the morning, the fire started . It continued for five days and rav-
aged most of the city, changing the street and building plans of London, as well as fire
safety forever.
The Monument, a 202-foot stone column, is topped with the Golden Boy of Pye Corner
pointing to Smithfield where the fire stopped. It was finished building in 1677 and is the
tallest isolated stone column in the world. On this tour, we'll just be checking out the sight.
It's 311 steps to the top where there is a small balcony to look out to the city.
